The Foundation

Our early philanthropic days began in 2008 when the Tshani Salon opened its salon doors to ten young sex workers who were undergoing rehabilitation through Rhema Christian Ministries. Together with the church, Tshani Salon trained the women in hair braiding skills to set them on a path towards economic freedom and reclaiming their dignity.

Since 2021, Tshani Foundation was officially born with our partnership with Amani Sasa Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting and helping refugee women in Uganda transform their lives socially and economically. Through this program, we have been able to train over 50 women in hair braiding skills.

The Salon

The longest standing salon business in Kampala since 2000, Tshani Salon has provided high quality braiding and hair styling services to the city’s suburban demographic.

Why We Do

What We Do

In Uganda, women take pride in donning the trendiest braids, both to help manage their thick curls as they go about their busy day-to-day activities, but also as a beauty statement. The hair salon is a safe space for women to bond, vent and catch up on the latest gossip and as a result, many develop long lasting bonds with their hair stylists. It is therefore no surprise that the hair and beauty industry in Uganda has grown tremendously over the years. You will see this from the many small and big salons scattered across both suburban neighborhoods and rural trading centers alike. Sadly, most of these salons have a short lifespan. Many operate informally and lack the proper knowledge on how to start, grow and maintain a business.

Tshani developed the foundation to pass on this knowledge to young women, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.

Participants receive training and mentorship in hair braiding through experiential learning. The curriculum equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain their own businesses.

The Numbers

We see these women every day. We work with these women every day. These women live among us. For some, we are these women.

We believe there is nothing more impressive than the power in our hands. By wielding it correctly, we are capable of making a life for ourselves. Everyone deserve that chance to try, no matter their background. Strand by strand, one woman uses the power in her hands to determine the life she desires.
