The Dream Team
Nicole Tshani
Executive Director, Tshani Foundation & Founder and CEO, Tshani Salon
Born in Democratic Republic of Congo, Nicole landed in Kampala as a refugee by way of Nairobi with two babies and a husband in tow. Since 1997, Nicole has been a hungry learner and teacher of braiding styles and techniques originating from all over Africa. In 2000, with a unique ability to speak five languages (English, Kiswahili, Lingala, French, and Luganda), Nicole started applying her hair braiding skills to women from diverse backgrounds. Soon after, the home salon moved to its location in Kibuli, where it remains to this day.
As a former refugee herself, and now a naturalized citizen of Uganda, Nicole intimately understands the struggles women refugees undergo during their transition period. The opportunity to work with women refugees through the Foundation feels like a full-circle moment for Nicole and her family. They are proud to be of service to women in need in this way.
Ivan Tumwesigye
Operations Lead, Tshani Foundation
Ugandan native Ivan got his start in philanthropy working with local churches in Bunga to provide safe spaces for women seeking training in tertiary skills. At Tshani, Ivan nurtures relationships with the foundation’s collaborators and manages the organization’s day-to-day operations.
Marité Tshani
Strategy Lead, Tshani Foundation & Creative and Innovation Director, Tshani Salon
Learning at her mother’s elbow was a given for Marité growing up, but what she did not expect was to fall wholly in love with the craft of hair braiding and styling. Today, together with Nicole, Marité leads instruction of the education program at the Salon where members of the Foundation’s partners learn from.
Growing up in Kampala, Marité broke with tradition expected from a young school girl by being a full time student and part-time apprentice to her mother’s formidable empire. Training in both business and creative innovation, Martié weaved styles and supplies from across Africa and the diaspora, blending them with traditional patterns to maintain Tshani Salon’s place as the most innovative braiding salon in Kampala.
Sharing their rigorous, time-honed skillset with other women remains the foundation’s top priority in order to contribute to economic empowerment of women, no matter their background, in the country and region
